The Gospel reminds us of the thirst that Jesus has for us, a thirst that is satisfied by faith, by the transformation of our hearts, and by the living water that He offered to the Samaritan woman.

Today the community was joyful. The young people from the dance group brought their families. They presented themselves and shared this moment with everyone. Even though we did not have a community lunch today, we had a simple time of fellowship with bread and coffee.

Afterwards, some of the young people spoke with Father Cooper. They shared a little about their stories and their lives and also asked that we reconsider the schedule of the youth group perhaps on Sundays, so that the young people from the dance group can also participate.

It was beautiful to see the joy in their eyes. I just left the meeting they had with the committee. I hope the retreat will also open more to new initiatives and future activities for the young people in the community.during the mass in announcement we motivated people invite them to Wednesday lent mass and soup and Friday via crucis.

Faced with a mystery he does not fully understand, he does not act out of fear, but with trust in God. By accepting Mary and giving the Child his name, Joseph embraces themission entrusted to him and becomes a cooperator in God’s plan of salvation. Jesus is called Emmanuel, “God with us,”reminding us that God enters our concrete history, our doubts, and our decisions. Like Joseph, we are invited to listen to God’s voice, to trust even in uncertainty, and to allow Him to dwell in our lives.

It is a time of hope, light, and spiritual union between heaven and earth.

Before the Mass, there was the preparation and decoration of the altar dedicated to the departed souls, a gesture of love and faith that is part of Latin tradition found from Mexico throughout Latin America. The altar was adorned with flowers, candles, and photos, creating a sacred space of memory and prayer.

During the celebration, after the Creed, each person received a candle to light in honor of their loved ones — a symbol of light that never fades before God. United in prayer, we remembered that love is stronger than death and that eternal life is the promise Christ has given us.

The altar remains in the parish as a living sign of faith, remembrance, and hope in the resurrection.

See our social media for more photos!

Miss Flor, Mrs. Francis, and Mrs. Erica led and guided the activities, helping the young people reflect on their dreams, hopes, and goals for the future. Together, they explored the essence of youth in light of faith.

Each young person drew the outline of their hand and wrote inside it their dreams and personal actions, both positive and negative. Then, everyone placed their handprints on a large poster titled “We Are the Church.” It was a beautiful and meaningful moment of unity and faith.

During the gathering, Father José offered a reflection on a verse from the Book of Ecclesiastes, reminding everyone of the importance of recognizing the time and purpose that God gives to every stage of life.

The youth also played soccer, learning the value of teamwork, communication, and following God’s guidance both on and off the field.

We also had the participation of the Yancuic Tlitl Youth Folkloric Dance Group, who presented “Thriller” on Saturday and traditional folkloric dances on Sunday. Their enthusiasm and talent filled the parish with joy, culture, and community spirit.

At the end, a passage from the Youth Bible was read, emphasizing faith, hope, and dreams as the foundation of Christian life and of the young Church.

We especially recognize Mrs. Erica, whose presence and dedication are of great value to her family and to the young people of our community.

Gospel Reflection – Luke 17:11–19
This Sunday’s Gospel speaks of healing and gratitude. Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one returns to give thanks — a foreigner. The passage reminds us to be humble and grateful, recognizing that our healing and essence come from God.

In biblical times, leprosy represented isolation, fear, and rejection.
Today, “modern leprosy” appears in other forms: distance, prejudice, fear of others, and social exclusion based on race, gender, or status.

Saint Francis Day & More!

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/saint-francis-day-more

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/saint-francis-day-more#comments

Uncategorized

Today at St. Nicholas of Myra we lived a very special day, full of faith, joy, and community. The Sunday celebration was marked by the readings that reminded us of the importance of faith — a faith that, even if small like a mustard seed, can move mountains — and by the activities that brought us together as a parish family.

One of the most moving moments was the “blessing of the animals” in honor of Saint Francis. Among those present, Oreo, the cat of Carolina and Jesus, stood out. With his size and beauty, he drew everyone’s attention. His presence reminded us that all creation praises God and that we are called to care for it with gratitude and love.

We also shared important announcements for parish life:
• Our upcoming spiritual retreat at the monastery on October 25 already has more than 40 people signed up. It will be a time of prayer, silence, and renewal in faith.
• We joyfully announced the beginning of our youth group, which will meet every second Saturday of the month, from 4 to 7 pm. After their gathering, the youth will participate and serve at the Saturday Mass alongside Father Cooper. The first meeting ended with a small “raffle donation,” and with the money raised, pizzas will be purchased for the group.
• The second Sunday of every month will be dedicated to community celebrations such as: birthdays and other special intentions.

We are also blessed to have a Youth Folkloric Dance Group led by Flor and Francis which meets every Friday at 7 pm at the parish. All young people are invited to join! This space is an opportunity to grow in culture, and friendship while expressing joy through music and dance.

Our parish is growing little by little. Saturday Mass is celebrated at 5 pm and Sunday Mass at 9:30 am. Our various ministries are also strengthening: altar servers, the Eucharistic ministry, the offertory, the care of the altar (with the service of Kellie, Tabin, pYaneth, and Angélica), and especially the music ministry, which already includes Carlos, Manuel, the children of Érica, and more than six members offering their gifts to the Lord.

All of this is a sign that God is guiding and blessing us. Just as Oreo surprised and delighted us today, God’s grace continues to appear among us in simple and beautiful ways. The invitation is to keep walking together, with living faith and grateful hearts.

Father Jose

Padre Jose

The Exultation of the Cross

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/the-exultation-of-the-cross

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/the-exultation-of-the-cross#comments

Uncategorized

This past Sunday, September 14, we joyfully celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. For us Christians, the Cross holds a profound meaning: it is not a sign of shame, but of the victory of love. In it we see not only the Son of God crucified, but the God who gave Himself out of love for all — for those who were already His and also for those who did not yet know Him.

The way of the Cross remains for us a call to follow the life of the Master in love, compassion, charity, and fraternity, never looking down on our neighbor. To love fully, without social distinction, but with integrity of life. Jesus taught us to forgive even our enemies, and on the Cross He never proclaimed hatred. On the contrary, He embraced all with love and freedom, without condemnation, leaving the path open for each person to follow Him with a whole heart.

We thank God for the growth of our music group and its beautiful voices, as well as for the youth folkloric dance group Yancuic Tlitl — which in Nahuatl means “Nueva Llama” (New Flame) — led by our parishioner Flor De María Cortez. It was also a joy to see young people and children joining in, such as the family of Erica and Osmar who served at the altar with us, along with our dear Quincy, son of Yaneth.

After the Holy Mass, we had our community gathering, which takes place every second Sunday of the month. At this time we celebrate birthdays, remembrances, and special dates of our brothers and sisters who wish to share them. On this occasion, we gave special thanks for the life of Kimberly López, a member of our dance group, who celebrated her birthday. It was also a wonderful opportunity for a shared meal, lovingly prepared thanks to the generosity of the families who contributed.

We sincerely thank everyone involved. If you would like to help continue these gatherings on the second Sunday of each month, please speak with Father José.

Special congratulations to this month’s birthday celebrant and to our dear Kimberly! May God pour out many blessings upon all.

With joy and gratitude,
Fr.

P. This is the mission of our Parish of St. Nicholas, in the heart of Encino: to welcome everyone without exception.

Our liturgy and our Mass are an invitation to participate in the Eucharist, so that we may live Christ and serve Christ in one another, with respect and love.

Within this mission, each ministry has an essential value:

Altar Servers: Ministry who serve at the altar and assist in the celebration.

Liturgical Preparation Team: who prepare and care for the sacred vessels and items used in the Holy Mass.

Offertory Team: who faithfully collect the offerings of the assembly.

Music Ministry which beautifies and enriches the liturgy; we now have four new volunteers in the choir.

Eucharistic Ministers who take Holy Communion to the sick after Mass, carrying out a very important mission.

In addition, our pastor is always available to visit the sick, offering confession, communion, and blessing.

Our Church must shine with the grace of the Lord Jesus both inside and outside its walls. That is why you too are called to collaborate! As a donor, altar server, lector, or by serving in any ministry of our parish.

Speak with our priests and find your place in the service of God.

The Narrow Gate

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/the-narrow-gate

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/the-narrow-gate#comments

Uncategorized

This Sunday, the Gospel invites us to reflect on the narrow gate. Jesus reminds us that following the path of the Kingdom requires effort, faithfulness, and a heart open to God’s love. Entering through the narrow gate means choosing the life of the Gospel, with commitment, humility, and service.

*This Sunday we celebrate the birthdays of Kaccyanasie, Sue, and, in advance, that of our dear Father José.* Father José, with words full of gratitude, thanked everyone for the joy, kindness, and affection shown both to him and among the members of the community.

Although Father José’s birthday was celebrated early, *there were many reasons to praise God for all that our community represents in the life of the Church and of its Rector, Father Michael Cooper* Together with all of us, *they work tirelessly for the mission of Jesus in the lives and hearts of people*..

To be signs of Christ to others is our mission. May this Gospel of the narrow gate inspire us to walk together, persevering in faith and love, so that we may be light and hope in the world.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/twentieth-sunday-in-ordinary-time

http://www.saintnicholasencino.org/cooperscorner/twentieth-sunday-in-ordinary-time#comments

Uncategorized

Dear Community of St. Nicholas,Here is a brief update from this past Sunday. It was a truly beautiful and joyful celebration.

With Gratitude,
Fr. Jose

Homily on Lk 12:49-53)
1.	Introduction
o	Jesus’ words surprise us: “I came to set the earth on fire… I did not come to bring peace but division.”
o	How can this be, if He is the Prince of Peace?
2.	The Fire of Jesus
o	Not superficial peace that hides injustice.
o	Fire = Holy Spirit → purifies, enlightens, transforms.
o	Burns away selfishness, lies, indifference.
3.	The Challenge of the Gospel
o	Fire disturbs and demands change.
Following Jesus can cause division, even within families.
o	Example: Prophet Jeremiah thrown into the cistern for speaking God’s truth.
4.	Encouragement from Hebrews
o	We are runners in a race.
o	Fix our eyes on Jesus who endured the cross.
o	Don’t give up on difficulties or suffering.
5.	Our Choice Today
o	Lukewarm disciples?
